The Sonoma Diet was inspired by the Mediterranean diet and emphasizes eating a generous variety of foods that boost your vitality, protect your heart, and improve your overall health.

There’s no "diet food" here — just wholesome, fresh, and delicious everyday foods that are easy to find, even easier to prepare, and proven to help you lose weight and boost your health!

Methods & Strategy

The Sonoma Diet is a unique weight loss plan that brings together, for the first time, the art and science of food. The appreciation and enjoyment of flavorful meals makes for a healthy eating style that becomes second nature. Simple instructions for the amounts and combinations of food make the plate your guide — and it was all designed so that you can shed pounds safely and easily until you reach your target weight.

The foods and recipes that will get you there have been carefully selected to make you healthier and happier as you lose the weight. The latest knowledge from the fast-evolving world of nutritional research is reflected in the food selection and meal preparations.
But this diet wasn’t born in a lab.

The Sonoma Diet was inspired by two special places in the real world, places where the intense enjoyment of an abundance of delicious food is a way of life. The diet gets its name from one of these places: it is inspired by the great-tasting, sun-drenched foods that make California’s beautiful Sonoma County a paradise of healthy eating and active lifestyles.

Sonoma cuisine, in turn, is a state of mind and reflection of the way of eating and daily foods enjoyed by the people who live on or near the Mediterranean Sea. The southern Europeans who follow this diet enjoy a bounty of wholesome and delicious fresh foods, including vegetables, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, lean meats, and wine. Sonoma cuisine, with its diverse flavors and emphasis on local fare, is a unique interpretation of the Mediterranean diet.

These two communities — New World and Old World — have something in common besides superb nutritional instincts. They share a festive approach to eating and a heartfelt love of great food that turns every meal into a celebration of life.

The Sonoma Waves
The Sonoma Diet is divided into three distinct "Waves." Wave 1 comprises the first ten days of the diet. During this period you will overcome your habit of consuming large amounts of sugars, refined flour products, and other foods that are quickly absorbed and that most likely led to your weight concerns in the first place.

In Wave 1, you’re naturally recalibrating your body and turning around bad eating habits. This challenge comes right at the beginning, when your enthusiasm and confidence are in high gear. You’ll be thrilled with the results, since this is the period of fastest weight loss. And just when you’re fully accustomed to your new, healthy eating habits, your portions and choices increase in Wave 2.

Wave 2 is the main segment of the diet, where you’ll stay until you reach your target weight. Weight loss during Wave 2 is not as quick as it was in the first wave, but it comes steadily. During this Wave you’ll continue to cultivate the Sonoma approach to eating, whereby each meal is savored slowly, with an emphasis on health and pleasure.

Wave 3 is the maintenance program of the diet and begins when you’ve met your target weight or other health goals. You’ll continue to enjoy Sonoma-friendly foods as well as such occasional indulgences as snacks and desserts.

As long as you follow the plate-filling instructions and food lists, you can choose whatever you want. You can follow the suggested meal plans or design your own menus — it’s up to you!

Portion Guide
How should you eat at each meal? That’s where The Sonoma Diet’s plate-and-bowl concept comes in. This concept brings the most recent nutritional science to your plate. It redefines the common American plate, heavily criticized for its super-sized portions, calories, and fat. The emphasis is a shift in focus, for more vegetables and grains to play center stage, along with lean meats.

You’ll be using a 7-inch plate or a 2-cup bowl for your breakfast and a 9-inch plate for your lunch and dinner. The diagrams on The Sonoma Diet online program will tell you how to fill those plates and bowl with the right amount of foods for each Wave of the diet!
