The Atkins Nutritional Approach is focused on healthy lifestyle goals and common sense nutrition by incorporating an optimal nutritional mix. This mix focuses on intelligent carbohydrate intake (high fiber and low sugar), adequate protein consumption, optimal intake of vitamins and minerals and a balance of natural fats. The ANA (Atkins Nutritional Approach) Phases:

Phase 1: Induction
Phase 2: Ongoing Weight Loss

Phase 1: INDUCTION

Induction is a brief, jump-start phase that triggers your body to predominantly burn fats. As you reduce carbs, your body will be prompted to use fat for fuel, resulting in weight loss from this fat-burning metabolism.

Induction lasts 14 days, after which you should see significant results. Beginning with Induction is your choice -- you can begin Atkins at any of the four phases. However, Induction will jump start your weight loss as you cut back significantly on carb consumption.

What Induction Can Do For You

•    Revitalize your life. Simple carbs can cause blood sugar spikes that lead to fatigue, foggy brain, irritability and other related symptoms.
•    Bust sugar and other food addictions. Leafy greens and other non starchy vegetables will be you primary source of carbs during Induction.

What Happens in Induction

Weight loss is significant during Induction. Each day 20 grams of Net Carbs (total carb grams less fiber grams) primarily from salad and other non-starchy vegetables are allowed.
Once you slow down on carb consumption, your body revs into action and starts burning fat. This takes about 48 hours to occur. It’s a dramatic shift and you may feel hungry or out of sorts for first the few days until the fat burning energy kicks in.

Phase 2: Ongoing Weight Loss

The accelerated weight loss pace of Induction becomes slower and steady during the Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) phase with the gradual addition of nutrient-rich carbs.

The expanded food options of the OWL phase of the Atkins Nutritional ApproachTM make this the right phase for anyone who only wants to slowly shed a few pounds, or for those who simply want to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

On OWL You Will:
•    Boost your body’s ability to burn fats.
•    Make better carbohydrate choices as you expand your taste for nutritious food
•    Understand your body better as you learn to recognize the amount of carbs you can consume and still lose weight or maintain your healthy weight.
•    Prepare yourself for permanent weight management.

What Happens in OWL

OWL gives the freedom to truly take weight loss into your own hands as you mix and match the most nutritious food to design your own weight-loss routine.
The Induction (Phase 1) limit of 20 Net Carbs a day is increased up to 25 Net Carbs daily in OWL. Gradually the daily carb tally is increased, in 5-carb increments, until weight loss slows.
Counting carbs is the key to successfully managing the added freedom of OWL. Your confidence will grow as you learn to successfully control carbohydrates in a way that is unique to your own body. Stick with OWL until you are within 5 to 10 pounds of your goal weight.

Phase 3: Pre-Maintenance

During the third phase of ANA, Pre-Maintenance, you’ll take ownership of your new Atkins healthy eating habits.

The Importance of Pre-Maintenance
Pre-maintenance is a practice run for a lifetime of well-being, as you take approach your goal weight and take ownership of the healthy eating habits of the Atkins Nutritional Approach. As you come within 5 to 10 pounds of your goal, build on your success by perfecting your eating habits for the future. The gradual weight loss during this phase puts you on the right track for a successful transition toward a life of healthy eating and weight maintenance.

How Pre-Maintenance Works

This phase, like OWL before it, empowers you to take your carb level up a notch while still losing weight. During OWL, carbs were increased weekly in 5 gram increments. Each week in Pre-Maintenance you can bump your daily allotment up another 10 more grams of Net Carbs, as long as you continue to lose those last few pounds. Ideally you will increase carbs until you’re losing less than a pound a week.

Continue this phase until you score your winning weight and maintain it for one month. Your ultimate goal is to achieve the state of balance called Atkins Carbohydrate Equilibrium (ACE). This is your individual level of carbohydrate intake at which you neither gain nor lose weight.

Phase 4: Lifetime Maintenance
